TBI Predicts Strong Overseas Leisure Demand in Q1 2017

The Q4 2016 Tourism Business Index released earlier this month expects a strong overseas leisure demand to have positive impacts on both the Accommodation sector and the Other Tourism Businesses segment in the first quarter of 2017. We take a closer look at what else to expect this quarter. 

Positive factors to travel and tourism business expected for this quarter:

  • Continued increase in foreign leisure travel
  • Increase in domestic leisure demand
  • Decreases in competitive supply

Negative factors to travel and tourism business expected for this quarter:

  • A strong exchange rate
  • Cost of inputs
  • Cost of labour

In terms of employment, 97.9% of respondents in the Accommodation sector expect employment levels for Q1 to remain the same. As for the Other Tourism Businesses segment, 28.2% of respondents expect to increase employment levels, whilst 25.4% expect to decrease employment levels.

In terms of capacity expansion for this quarter, 76.0% of respondents in the Accommodation sector and 61.7% in the Other Tourism Businesses segment cited capacity will remain the same. Download the TBI Q4 2016 Executive Summary here
